The IP Interconnection (IPI) Working Party has already started work, with initial meetings in June achieving agreement on the project’s scope. The party’s primary task is to develop a code of practice, including technical specifications, for the exchange of traffic between Next Generation Networks (NGNs). The working party will also be assisting Telecom with its Operational Separation obligations to consult with the wider industry on IP interconnection.
The IPI working party intends to produce an interim report in December 2008 and to complete its work in mid-2009. Further details of the scope and intended outputs of the IPI working party are available on TCF website at www.tcf.org.nz/ip.

Background information:
Telecommunications Carriers’ Forum: The Telecommunications Carriers’ Forum (TCF) plays a vital role in the New Zealand telecommunications industry by working collaboratively on the development of key industry standards and codes of practice that underpin the digital economy.
The TCF works with a wide variety of industry participants and government agencies to promote competition and investment in the sector, accelerate the introduction of new generation services, and encourage excellence in customer service.
IP interconnection: As operators deploy IP networks, the need arises to interconnect networks to enable end to end service delivery across multiple networks.
Interconnection is a reciprocal relationship. In most cases both parties to an interconnection need it to enable them to offer complete services to their customers – for example, the ability to make calls to, and to be called from, customers on any other network.
