The telecommunications industry works collectively to manage the end-of-life mobile handsets and accessories responsibly through the RE:MOBILE product stewardship scheme in partnership with local e-waste recyclers.
RE:MOBILE is the only mobile phone recycling programme operating in New Zealand that has been accredited by the Minister for the Environment under the Waste Minimisation Act. The Scheme provides all New Zealanders with a thoughtful and environmentally friendly disposal option for their unwanted mobile handsets.
The TCF has recently published the inaugural RE:MOBILE Annual Report showing good results for the nine month reporting period:
- Over 96,075 phones collected
- 12 tonnes of potentially harmful substances diverted from landfill.
The Working Party is currently reviewing the scheme’s governance and operations to see what improvements can be made to support the scheme objectives.
