TCF June 2025 Newsletter

Jun 30, 2025

A damp end to June won’t detract from the work programme here at the TCF. It’s been a busy quarter with plenty of government engagement on key issues, such as the national environmental standards for telecommunications and the upcoming review of telecommunications by the Ministry for Regulation, not to mention the great work from Te Waihanga on New Zealand’s broader infrastructure plan. I also had the excellent opportunity to find out how things are going across the ditch, with the CommsDay Summit in Sydney.

It’s interesting to see how far ahead of our Aussie cousins we are in New Zealand. We have huge uptake of fibre to the home whereas they’re struggling to get even half of those who can connect to sign up. We are already moving on to hyperfibre (4Gbit/s and 8Gbit/s speeds) while they ponder whether to increase their upload speeds to 100Mbit/s. They’re still working out how to connect rural and remote customers to the net while we’re in a position of offering multiple technologies.
